VernaPeople - Meet Shirley MacDonald

In this edition of VernaPeople, we introduce you to Shirley MacDonald. If you haven’t had the chance to meet her, now is your chance!

What is your role here at Vernacare?

I was promoted to Customer Services Team Coordinator here at Vernacare in April 2019. I manage a team of 5 ladies and together we are responsible for products and contracts within the UK market.

What does your current role involve day to day?

Day to day I deal with customers and distributors, such as NHS Supply Chain and Bunzl, both on the phone and via email, making sure that all orders are processed efficiently.

The Vernacare System has been adopted as best practice throughout 95% of hospitals within the UK. Many nurses and patients across different wards rely on our products, so it is critical that we provide our deliveries efficiently.

How long have you been at Vernacare?

I have been with Vernacare for quite a long time! I first began working here in 1977 when the company was called Vernon Carus. When I first started, I was working in the factory sewing and packaging products. In 1984 I got married, so I left for 12 months, but returned in 1985 to assist the supervisor on the factory shop floor. In 1986 I joined the customer services team, for 4 years, then I left on maternity leave. Soon after I returned on a temporary basis, helping with the organisation of samples for tenders and contracts. In 1991 I returned on a permanent basis and have been with the company ever since, working in the customer services team.

The most enjoyable part of my job is helping other people. I love speaking with our customers, helping to sort out any issues they have and delivering the best outcomes.

What are the challenges of your role and what do you most enjoy?

Managing people and looking after a team is not something I have ever done before so it has been challenging. However I am really enjoying the role and working closely with my team, we all get along very well and work hard to fulfill orders.

The most enjoyable part of my job is helping other people. I love speaking with our customers, helping to sort out any issues they have and delivering the best outcomes.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work?

When I am not working, I am often socialising with my friends and family. I have 5 siblings - 2 brothers and 3 sisters, so there is always something going on! My family will be growing this November, as my daughter is expecting her first child which will be my first grandchild!

I also enjoy walking, I often go out at lunch time and walk around the village with my colleagues to get some fresh air and keep active!

What would you say is your most significant personal achievement?

My biggest personal achievement was overcoming a kidney transplant 12 years ago due to having polycystic kidneys. It is a major procedure with a long recovery time so it was quite an accomplishment to recover from this.

Is there anything you’ve always wanted to do in life?

When I was younger, I aspired to be a nanny, as I loved being around children. Whilst this never happened, I can’t wait for the birth of my first grandchild in November, we have plenty of exciting plans scheduled, and we are particularly looking forward to a big family Christmas!
